Locked your keys in the car? What to do

First make sure everyone is safe, then skip the coat hanger. Here is what to do when you are locked out of your car and what we need to open it.

First: is anyone inside the car?

If a child, an older adult or a pet is locked inside, especially on a warm day, call 911 right away. In South Florida heat, the inside of a closed car can get dangerously hot, even with the windows cracked. In that situation emergency services come first, and a locksmith comes second.

If everyone is outside the car and safe, take a breath. Being locked out of your car is a hassle, not an emergency. Stay somewhere safe and visible, especially at night or on the side of a road, and keep your phone charged while you look up a "locksmith near me".

Skip the coat hanger and don't force the door

It is tempting to grab a coat hanger, a wedge or a screwdriver, but forcing a car open often turns a small problem into a repair bill. Modern doors hold side airbags, wiring for the windows and locks, and sensors that are easy to damage. A bent door frame, a torn weather strip or a scratched window is a repair you don't need.

Breaking a window is the last resort, not the first. Glass can cut, and a broken window leaves the car open to weather and theft until it is replaced. Unless someone inside is in danger, in which case you call 911, wait for help instead.

What to tell us when you call

When you call or text a mobile locksmith, a few details help us bring the right tools and give you an exact price before we drive out. And if someone can bring your spare key safely, that may solve it too; we will tell you so honestly. Call or text in English or Spanish. Here is what helps us most:

  • Where the car is: map pin, cross streets or garage level
  • Year, make and model
  • Where the keys are: cabin, trunk or lost
  • Smart key or a key you turn
  • Anything else, like a dead car battery

We check ID once the car is open

Before you drive away, we check a photo ID and the registration or title. If those papers are locked inside, that is fine: we check them as soon as the door is open. It may feel like an extra step when you are in a hurry, but it means nobody can call us to unlock a car that isn't theirs, including yours.

How we handle your car

We use entry tools made for opening cars and work carefully around the door, the paint, the weather seals and the wiring inside. Every car is different, and we take the time to do it right instead of forcing anything. Once it is open, you get your keys back in your hand.

If the keys turn out to be lost and not just locked inside, we can often cut and program a new key on site in the same visit. And if a smart key is acting up or a key is broken in the lock, we can look at that while we are there, anywhere in Miami-Dade or Broward.

Questions

What should I do if I locked my keys in the car?

If a child or pet is inside, call 911. Otherwise, stay safe near the car and call or text a car locksmith with the location and the car. Avoid coat hangers and prying, which can damage the door, the seals and the wiring.

Will unlocking my car damage it?

We use entry tools made for cars and work carefully around the door, the paint and the seals. That is the reason to call a locksmith instead of forcing a door or a window yourself.

Can you unlock my car if the smart key is inside?

Yes. Push-to-start cars can lock with the smart key inside, often when the fob battery is weak. We open the car, you get the key back, and we can check the fob while we are there.
